After graduating from Oberlin College in 1960 with a major in religion, I went to work for Oxford University Press in NYC as a copy editor in the bible department.  It was then that I became re-acquainted with Ted Speck, LHS class of 1953.  We married in 1961 and settled in Tenafly.  Ted worked as an advertising copywriter in Manhattan.  I became a full-time mom when our first baby came along in 1962.  By 1969 we had 4 children, 3 boys and 1 girl, and moved to a larger home in Weston, CT, staying for 33 years. Our kids all married and in 2005 we were presented with grandchild # 10. In early 2007 we'll have the 11th.

In Weston I was involved in community affairs, particularly the League of Women Voters.  After serving as League president for 4 years, I was persuaded to run for first selectman (the equivalent of mayor in a CT small town) and agreed to give it a shot.  I was stunned when I beat the incumbent!  I won a second term but didnít run again because it was time to get a ďrealĒ job.  Next I was hired by an investor owned water company as manager of public affairs.  When the recession of 1991 hit, I was downsized out.  I did some consulting work from home for a while, then became director of the CT office of Regional Plan Association, a non-profit tri-state land use organization.

In 2002 Ted and I decided that if we ever wanted to live in Manhattan we had better do it before he retired.  So we sold the house in CT and rented an apartment in Battery Park City with a panoramic view of the Hudson.  Was a fabulous experience but we knew it was just an interlude.  In 2004 we moved to the college community of Swarthmore, a town we had our eye on for several years as a nice place for retirement.  It reminds us very much of Leonia in the 1950ís.  Ted is still in advertising and works part-time from home for two clients.  Iím busy in the community and with the reunion!  See you in October!
